Kitesurf y windsurf en Tenerife

As we said in our post about diving in Tenerife, our island is the perfect place for water sports like kitesurf and windsurf. If you are a lover of any of these sports, do not miss the best beaches to enjoy the most ideal conditions for it.

The Canary Islands are one of the favorite European destinations of surfers due to its weather, which allows surfing all the year. Trade winds of the Northern Hemisphere blow regularly and consistently, favoring the creation of waves. Its long beaches are a paradise to enjoy while you drag the surfboard into the water looking for the big wave.

Although Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are usually the most popular islands for surfing due to strong winds, the mild weather of Tenerife has made this island and its beaches (Punta Blanca, Las Conchas, Las Bordas…) a point of interest for experts in dominate the waves.

Discover some of the best places to surf, kitesurf and windsurf in Tenerife:

Kitesurf at El Médano

El Médano is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. This grey sand beach is one of the most complete at south of Tenerife. You can find all kinds of services (surf shops, bars…) along its 750 meters long. You must stay away from the nearest part of the town to reach the best surf zone, watching the Red Mountain volcanic cone. In there, the PWA World Cup takes place, in addition of being some of the best schools like Red Rock Surf and also the Escuela de Deportes Náuticos Tenerife Kitesurf (school of water sports), where it works the instructor Sofia Rodriguez, Spanish champion and competitor in the World Kite Tour.

Windsurf at Playa de las Américas

The wind usually blows in the area of Playa de las Americas, favoring the formation of one to three meters waves. It is perfect for a medium-level or expert-level on windsurfing. In addition to several sailing schools, this part of the island stands out as having one of the most famous spots for surfing: la izquierda de Las Palmeras (The Spanish Left), a surf spot with a pipe long tour which you can move in different sections.

Surf at Igueste de San Andrés

Following in the northeast area of the island is placed Igueste de San Andrés, a famous place for having the best left waves of Tenerife. For those seeking crystal pipes in which practicing radical maneuvers and Take Off, the izquierda de Igueste and the perfect left handed waves won’t disappoint you at all.

Keep in mind that this northern area is perfect for surfing in summer, while if you come in winter is best to go to the south of Tenerife.

Watersports at Costa Adeje

For those interested in all these sports, but also in other water activities, Costa Adeje has many nautical schools where to practice all kinds of water sports, jet ski safaris, paddle surf or flyboard; and also there are rental companies of surfboards and sailboats.
