Submarinismo en Tenerife

By | 22 July, 2016 | 0 comments

Surf, kayak, para-sailing, jet skis, water skiing, fly-fish… water sports in Tenerife are a big claim for those who enjoy the sea in a different way. One of the strong points of Tenerife is the great diversity of its seabed. For this reason there are many diving centers scattered throughout the island. From Adrián Hoteles we suggest you some ideas about why to go diving in Tenerife.

Marine classroom of El Puertito

El Puertito de Adeje is located just ten minutes away driving from our five stars Roca Nivaria Gran Hotel. It is a perfect place to enjoy beaches and coves of white sand and crystal waters. Since the end of May 2016, it has been created in there a marine classroom to enhance biodiversity in the area. The visitors will learn about research projects and the rescue of underwater flora and fauna. When you’ll dive, you will find octopus, seahorses, sea urchins and lime green turtles, among others.

Snorkeling with turtles

A classic diving on the island is to discover the natural habitat of sea turtles… and even swim with them! The same bay in El Puertito de Adeje is the perfect place to see them. Also in the nearby location of Armeñime you will see how the curious turtles approach you, especially if they see you have something to eat for them. There, you will also share this sea trip with nudibranchs, handmaidens, stripes, Thalassoma pavo or seahorses. In the case of Playa Paraiso you may not find many turtles, but it certainly is a very rich area in marine fauna where live round fantail stingrays, spiny butterfly rays, and a big variety of fishes.

Freediving in Costa Adeje

One type of extreme diving is known as freediving, a voluntary suspension of breathing with only the help of your lungs at great depths. According to Miguel Lozano, winner of silver medals twice in depth disciplines, one of the best places to practice this sport is Tenerife.

Precisely, near Jardines de Nivaria and Colón Guanahaní, in Costa Adeje, there is the Apnea Academy West Europe. Founded by former world champion of apnea Umberto Pelizzari, this school offers various activities, courses of apnea and diving courses at different levels. They also have underwater photography courses and they include an aquatic school for children in the summer.

Discover sunken ships

For those who want to see more than underwater landscapes full of life, another interesting proposal is to dive into the sea bed until find some shipwrecks. The most popular is the canyon which is ‘El Condesito’, a boat of 30 meters in length that sank in 1971. It is located on the southern part of the island, but to access the area it is required a boat.

Currently there is a project to create one of the largest underwater park of Spain in Güímar (Tenerife), where abandoned ships will be sank to create an artificial reef. A perfect attraction for scuba divers which may it will be developed in the near future.
