Un clima privilegiado en el que viviremos una eterna primavera, diversión, vida nocturna, cultura, naturaleza, playas cristalinas… Podríamos enumerar un sinfín de motivos por los que Tenerife es, para nosotros y para todas las personas que nos visitan, la isla afortunada. La más grande de las Islas Canarias es también un auténtico paraíso en el Océano Atlántico donde, además de sus playas (ya os explicamos en un post anterior cuáles son, para nosotros, 10 playas paradisíacas únicas en Tenerife), también destacan sus fiestas locales.
De hecho, otro aliciente más para visitar la isla son sus fiestas, repartidas a lo largo de todo el año y cada una de ellas con una particularidad. ¿Sabéis cuáles son las más importantes o tradicionales? En este post os contamos 8 festividades en Tenerife con encanto que debéis vivir al menos una vez en la vida.
1. Carnaval de Tenerife
Y no podíamos comenzar este listado de fiestas populares sin hablar de la festividad por antonomasia de Tenerife: el Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, una de las celebraciones más populares no solo en España, sino también en el resto del mundo. De hecho, podríamos decir que nuestro Carnaval es el segundo más conocido a nivel mundial, solo superado por el Carnaval de Río de Janeiro (de hecho, ambas ciudades están hermanada). El Carnaval de Tenerife fue declarada, además, Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional en 1980.

El Carnaval de Tenerife 2019 se ha celebrado del 27 de febrero al 10 de marzo. No obstante, los actos del Carnaval dieron comienzo oficialmente el 1 de febrero con el acto de inauguración, que da paso a los posteriores actos. Entre ellos destacan el concurso de murgas infantiles y adultas o las galas de elección de la reina del carnaval (infantil, tercera edad y adulta).
Y a partir del 1 de marzo, el plato fuerte con la cabalgata, una gran fiesta en las calles de la ciudad. El Carnaval de Tenerife culmina con el tradicional Entierro de la Sardina.
2. Festividad de Santa Cruz (Día de las Canarias)
El 30 de mayo se celebra en todas las Islas Canarias el Día de Canarias. Una festividad en la que se conmemora el aniversario de la primera sesión del Parlamento de Canarias con sede en la ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, el 30 de mayo de 1983.

Cada 30 de mayo se destacan los valores y la identidad canaria a través de muchas actividades y manifestaciones culturales, tales como folclore, eventos deportivos y manualidades.
3. Octava del Corpus Christi (La Orotava)
Las Fiestas Patronales de la Villa de La Orotava (Tenerife) son una festividad que agrada por igual tanto a locales como a visitantes. Una fiesta que comenzó a celebrarse a partir del siglo XVII con motivo del Corpus Christi, cuando los vecinos comenzaron a hacer alfombras de flores para recibir la procesión que cada año tiene lugar en las calles de la localidad. Unas alfombras que, con el tiempo, se han convertido en elementos artísticos de suma importancia.

Desde 1827, la celebración tiene lugar 60 días después del domingo de Resurrección. El Corpus Christi precede a otras dos fiestas también muy tradicionales en la zona: la romería de San Isidro Labrador y Santa María de la Cabeza.
El Corpus Christi de La Orotava fue declarada, además, Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional en el año 1980.
4. Fiestas del Carmen – Tenerife
La celebración en honor de la Virgen del Carmen es otra de las fiestas tradicionales en Tenerife y en muchas ciudades del resto de España abrazadas por el mar. Patrona de los Marineros, la Virgen del Carmen aúna una gran cantidad de actos en los que se produce una unión muy emotiva y significativa entre el puerto y la ciudad.

La festividad de la Virgen del Carmen tiene lugar cada 16 de julio, día de la Virgen del Carmen, con diversos actos que se suceden los días posteriores. Entre ellos, el más importante: el traslado de la Virgen del Carmen al muelle pesquero donde por la tarde se realiza la embarcación para el posterior traslado a la Iglesia de santa Ana.
5. Los Hachitos de San Juan – Icod de los Vinos (Tenerife)
Cada año, durante la Noche de San Juan, el municipio tinerfeño acoge una tradición que tiene su origen en la época aborigen: Los Hachos o “los Hachitos”. O lo que es lo mismo: “candelabros” de unos 2-3 metros de alturas que, confeccionados con madera de tea y decoradas con ramas, flores y cintas, portan en uno de sus extremos uno o varios cacharros donde se prenden paños mojados en petróleo. Como os hemos dicho anteriormente, esta celebración tiene lugar cada 23 de junio, durante la noche de San Juan, en el municipio de Icod de los Vinos. Al caer la noche se encienden las hogueras y comienza un desfile cuyo recorrido va desde La Vega hasta el Amparo, acompañado en todo momento por la música del “tajaraste”, música y danza típica de la región.
6. Fiestas de la Candelaria (Tenerife)
De origen católico, la fiesta de la Candelaria es una fiesta popular en honor a la Virgen de la Candelaria, patrona de las Canarias. De hecho, se dice que la advocación de la Virgen María es de origen canario, siendo aquí donde tuvo lugar su aparición. La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria, celebrada el 15 de agosto, tiene la consideración de Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.

En Tenerife son dos las fechas en las que tiene lugar dicha celebración: el 2 de febrero (fiesta local en Tenerife) y el 15 de agosto (fiesta regional en todas las Canarias). En Candelaria, municipio tinerfeño, tiene lugar la llamada Procesión de las Candelas, organizada en la noche del 1 al 2 de febrero. Durante esta noche se apagan las luces del municipio mientras el fuego de las candelas alumbra las calles, en una escena muy emotiva.
7. Fuegos del Risco (Garachico – Tenerife)
Garachico (Tenerife), año 1706. Hace algo más de 300 años, este pequeño municipio de Tenerife fue arrasado totalmente por la erupción volcánica del volcán de Trevejo. Lejos de desaparecer, el municipio renació.
Por eso, cada cinco años, el municipio de Garachico recuerda aquel desastre natural con la tradicional celebración de los Fuegos del Risco: fuegos artificiales y bolas incandescentes que ruedan ladera abajo y rememoran un hecho que cambió la historia del pueblo y que es, además, una de las exhibiciones pirotécnicas más impresionantes de Canarias.

La Festividad de los Fuegos del Risco se celebra cada cinco años. La última ocasión fue en 2015, por lo que el año que viene, en 2020, podremos volver a disfrutar de una celebración que tiene lugar durante las fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia (entre el 23 de julio y el 2 de agosto).
8. Tablas de San Andrés (Icod de los Vinos – Tenerife)
La Fiesta de San Andrés es otra de las fiestas locales de Icod de los Vinos, municipio del que ya os hablamos anteriormente. Una fiesta que no tienen ningún origen religioso a pesar de su nombre, sino más bien “rural”, ya que surgió a raíz del transporte de la madera desde la montaña hasta la costa para confeccionar barcos y barricas.
En esta celebración, jóvenes y adultos se deslizan, subidos en tablas de madera, por la calle “del plano” mientras los cosecheros de la zona descorchan los vinos de la última vendimia.

La Fiesta de las Tablas de San Andrés se celebra la noche del 29 al 30 de noviembre, coincidiendo con el día de San Andrés.

1. Tenerife Carnival
And we could not start this list of popular festivals without talking about the festival par excellence of Tenerife: the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the most popular celebrations not only in Spain, but also in the rest of the world. In fact, we could say that our Carnival is the second best known worldwide, only surpassed by the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro (in fact, both cities are twinned). The Tenerife Carnival was also declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 1980.

The Tenerife 2019 Carnival was held from the 27th February to the 10th March. However, the Carnival events officially began on February 1st with the inauguration ceremony, which gives way to subsequent events. Among them are the competition for children’s and adults’ murgas or the gala election of the queen of the carnival (children, senior citizens and adults).
And from March 1st, the main course with the parade, a great party in the streets of the city. The Carnival of Tenerife culminates with the traditional Burial of the Sardine.
2. Festivity of Santa Cruz (Canary Islands Day)
The 30th of May all the Canary Islands celebrate the Day of the Canary Islands. A festivity commemorating the anniversary of the first session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands with headquarters in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on 30th May 1983.

Every 30th of May, the values and identity of the Canary Islands are highlighted through many activities and cultural manifestations, such as folklore, sports events and handicrafts.
3. Corpus Christi Octave (La Orotava)
The Fiestas Patronales de la Villa de La Orotava (Tenerife) are a festivity that pleases both locals and visitors alike. A festival that began to be celebrated from the seventeenth century on the occasion of Corpus Christi, when neighbors began to make carpets of flowers to receive the procession that every year takes place in the streets of the town. These rugs have, over time, become very important artistic elements.

Since 1827, the celebration takes place 60 days after Easter Sunday. Corpus Christi precedes two other very traditional festivities in the area: the pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza.

4. Fiestas del Carmen – Tenerife
The celebration in honour of the Virgen del Carmen is another of the traditional festivals in Tenerife and in many cities in the rest of Spain embraced by the sea. Patron saint of the sailors, the Virgen del Carmen brings together a large number of events in which there is a very emotional and significant union between the port and the city.

The festivity of the Virgen del Carmen takes place every 16th of July, the day of the Virgen del Carmen, with different acts that take place the following days. Among them, the most important: the transfer of the Virgen del Carmen to the fishing dock where in the afternoon the boat is made for the later transfer to the Church of Santa Ana.
5. Hachitos de San Juan – Icod de los Vinos (Tenerife)
Every year, during the Night of San Juan, the municipality of Tenerife welcomes a tradition that has its origin in the aboriginal time: Los Hachos or “los Hachitos”. Or what is the same: “candelabros” of about 2-3 meters high, made of tea wood and decorated with branches, flowers and ribbons, carry in one of its ends one or several pots where cloths are lit wet in oil. The reason for this festivity: the celebration of the summer solstice.

As we have said before, this celebration takes place every June 23rd, during the night of San Juan, in Icod de los Vinos. At nightfall the bonfires are lit and a parade begins. The route goes from La Vega to the Amparo, accompanied at all times by the music of the “tajaraste”, music and dance typical of the region.
6. Candlemas Day (Tenerife)
With a Catholic origin, the Candlemas is a popular festival in honour of the Virgen de la Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. In fact, it is said that the invocation of the Virgin Mary is of Canarian origin, being here where its apparition took place. The Candlemas, celebrated on August 15th, is considered a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest.

In Tenerife there are two dates when this celebration takes place: February 2nd (local holiday in Tenerife) and August 15th (regional holiday in all the Canary Islands). In Candelaria, municipality of Tenerife, takes place the so-called Procession of the Candelas, organized on the night of 1 to 2 February. During this night the lights of the municipality are extinguished while the fire of the candles illuminates the streets, in a very emotional scene.
7. Fire from the Cliff (Garachico – Tenerife)
Garachico (Tenerife), year 1706. More than 300 years ago, this small village of Tenerife was totally destroyed by the volcanic eruption of the Trevejo volcano. Far from disappearing, the municipality was reborn.
That is why, every five years, the village of Garachico remembers that natural disaster with the traditional celebration of the Fire form the Cliff: fireworks and incandescent balls that roll down the hillside and recall an event that changed the history of the town and is also one of the most impressive pyrotechnic exhibitions in the Canary Islands.

The Festivity of the Fire from the Cliff is celebrated every five years. The last occasion was in 2015, so next year, in 2020, we can once again enjoy a celebration that takes place during the feasts of the Holy Christ of Mercy (between 23rd July and 2nd August).
8. Tablas de San Andrés (Icod de los Vinos – Tenerife)
The Fiesta de San Andrés is another of the local festivals of Icod de los Vinos, a municipality we have already mentioned. It is a festival that does not have any religious origin despite its name, but rather “rural”, as it arose from the transport of wood from the mountains to the coast to make boats and barrels.
In this celebration, young people and adults slide up on wooden boards along the street “del plano” while the local winemakers uncork the wines from the last harvest.

The Fiesta de las Tablas de San Andrés is celebrated on the night of 29th to 30th November, coinciding with the day of San Andrés.
