¿Cuándo es el Carnaval de Tenerife 2017?
Ya se han confirmado las fechas del Carnaval de Tenerife 2017: del 22 de febrero al 5 de marzo una de las fiestas más populares de la isla – y del mundo – llenará de alegría cada rincón de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Declarada como Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional desde 1980, el origen del Carnaval de Tenerife se remonta al siglo XVII. De aquella época existen hasta documentos en los que aparecen reseñas y opiniones de visitantes que acudían a la ciudad para disfrutar de sus fiestas carnavalescas. No obstante, con tal de evitar esa prohibición y seguir celebrando su carnaval, los tinerfeños le cambiaron el nombre a “Fiestas de Invierno”, evitando el castigo del Gobierno por celebrar unas fiestas vetadas.
Posteriormente, cuando la democracia se estabilizó y estas celebraciones volvieron a ser libres para todo el mundo, la ciudad decidió que el carnaval se convirtiese en un evento temático: cine, moda, magia, dibujos animados o los años 80 son solo algunos de los grandes temas que han protagonizado las fiestas. Además desde hace algunos años el Ayuntamiento promueve una consulta popular para que los tinerfeños sean quienes escojan el motivo principal.
Valorado como uno de los mejores carnavales del mundo junto a los de Río de Janeiro, Venecia o Nueva Orleans; el Carnaval de Tenerife también presume de entrar en el libro Guiness World Records de 1987 por contar con la mayor participación de público en un baile celebrado al aire libre… ¡con 200,000 personas!

Cómo se celebra el Carnaval de Tenerife
Durante el mes de enero y febrero siempre se ultiman todos los detalles y preparativos para los festejos principales: concursos de murgas, de disfraces, de canciones y, por supuesto, con la elección de la reina infantil. No obstante, el pistoletazo de salida se da con la gala de elección de la reina del carnaval (modalidad adulta), celebrada como cada año en el Centro Internacional de Ferias y Congresos de Tenerife.
El tema del carnaval de Tenerife 2017 es “el Caribe”, por lo que seguro que no faltarán plumas, flores y colores vistosos entre los disfraces locales.
Este año la fiesta grande inundará las calles a partir del 24 de febrero con la “cabalgata anunciadora”, en la que desfilará la reina junto a las murgas, comparsas y agrupaciones musicales. Posteriormente la capital pone en marcha un conjunto de actividades, conciertos y actos que durarán día y noche hasta la clausura de las fiestas el domingo 5 de marzo.

Las chicas desfilan con trajes que suelen pesar entre 150 y 200 kilos debido a su gran infraestructura hecha de plumas, plástico, metal y pedrería. Además de presidir las rúas y los eventos del carnaval, la ganadora también lo representará en las ferias de turismo que se realicen ese año.

Todos los grupos recorren las principales calles de la ciudad “anunciando” la llegada del carnaval. La reina y las damas de honor pasean en su carroza escoltadas por las demás comparsas. Al final hay un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales.

Este gran coso desfila por la Avenida Marítima de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, en el que también participan todas las comparsas, murgas y reinas del carnaval.
1 de marzo: Entierro de la sardina
Exhibición pirotécnica, bailes y actuaciones. Es el primer día de cuaresma y las calles de la ciudad se visten de luto para acompañar la muerte de la “sardina” (junto a la gente que se disfraza de viudas) y despedir el carnaval.
2 de marzo: Festival de rondallas
3 de marzo: Coso infantil
4 de marzo: Carnaval de día

Also since some years ago the City Council promotes a popular consultation for the people of Tenerife are the ones who choose the main motive.

When is the Carnival of Tenerife 2017?
The official dates of the Carnival of Tenerife 2017 have already been confirmed: from February 22nd to March 5st, one of the most popular celebration on the island will be in every corner of Santa Cruz de Tenerife full of joy! This is one of the reasons why this carnival is recognized nationally and internationally. Also, the Spanish Tourism State Department declared it as International Touristic Interest Party in 1980.
Regarding the history of the Carnival of Tenerife, the first written references, dated from the XVII century, mention already this festivity. In these writings we also can find the opinion of several people that passed by the city and enjoyed the celebration. There are also older writings in the official city regulations that expected to establish the social order during the celebration of the carnival.
Years after, during the dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and Francisco Franco, the carnival was prohibited in Spain. But the people of Tenerife managed to fool out the government and continue with the celebrations of the carnival. They changed the name for “Winter Celebration” avoiding the Govern’s punishment.
In 1987, when the dictatorships were gone and the democracy was established, the citizens of Santa Cruz de Tenerife decided to set a theme for the carnival. So, from that year on a different theme has characterized the most important festivity of the city: cinema, fashion, magic, the 80s and cartoons have been topics of the carnival. Also since some years ago the City Council promotes a popular consultation for the people of Tenerife are the ones who choose the main motive.
Valued as one of the best carnivals in the world like those of Rio de Janeiro, Venice or New Orleans; The Carnival of Tenerife also are in the Guinness World Records book since 1987, when it had the most audience participation in a dance held outdoors… with 200,000 people!

How to celebrate the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
During the months of January and February it’s time to finalize all the details and preparations for the main festivities: contests of costumes, “murgas”, songs and, of course, the election of the childlike queen. However, the big party starts with the election of the carnival queen (adult mode), celebrated every year at the International Center of Fairs and Congresses of Tenerife.
The Carnival of Tenerife 2017 theme is ‘the Caribbean’: feathers, flowers and colorful colors will be the most popular elements for the local costumes for sure.
The party will walk through the streets from February 24th with the Announcer Parade, which is led by the queen and followed by the other Carnival groups. After that, the capital will offer activities, concerts and events, day and night, until the closing ceremony on March 5th.

It’s the first and one of the most important appointments of the Carnival. This day, the annual representative girl is chosen and with her, the costume for the Carnival. It is like a fashion show where the girls wear costumes that weigh between 150 and 200 kilos because they have a big structure made of feathers, plastic, metal and jewelery. These dresses need to have wheels to be worn by the girls.
The role of the Queen of the Carnival is to lead the Carnival parades and she also represents the city in the tourism fairs of the year.
